Than You Realize

While I became an Olympian in one sport and an All-American and a D1 recruit in a completely different sport...I was not some "gifted" athlete. 

 

That is why I resonate so well with athletes who are struggling to make it happen.

 

As the only-child to two musicians, I didn't have any older brothers and sisters to  help mold me into an athlete.

 

The most famous "sports" photo I have of my Dad is of him holding a baseball bat...upside down.

 

And I was also a late-bloomer coming into my own at the age of fifteen.  I'm sure your athlete has a lot more going on for them than I did at that young age.

Physical and Technical Training Will Only Get You So Far

What you MUST know...

Many of the athletes and parents who come through our program are shocked to realize how working "hard" and doing "more" only gets them so far.

 

The idea that you can out-work your opponent is often glamorized but ends up leaving many athletes disappointed.

 

"But I'm working so hard!!!" they say.

 

While hard work does pay off in certain situations, it is not the ONLY thing you need to focus on.

 

Now...I'm not going to tell you that success in sports is 10% physical and 90% mental like many sport psychologists would like to tell you. 

 

But I will tell you that mastering the mental part of sports is really the "glue" that makes it strong.  It's what holds it all together when things start to matter.

My Lego Analogy For Athletic Performance

If you've ever built a Lego set you'll know that while they look really good...they aren't very strong.

 

Many athletes remind me of those Lego sets.  On the outside, they look great.  

 

But when the pressure is placed on them...they fall apart.

 

A friend of mine who was an avid Lego collector once built the largest Lego set you can buy...a Star Wars Imperial Star Destroyer.

 

At 4,784 pieces it took him a week to put together..

 

Proudly, he hung it from the ceiling.  

 

But when the hook he placed in the ceiling gave way, the Star Destroyer fell to the floor shattering into...4,784 pieces.

 

He was gutted.

 

What his Lego set really needed...was glue.

Mental Performance Is the "Glue" That Makes Athletes Bulletproof

Mental Performance Is a Trainable Skill and to Ignore Mental Training Is a Choice to be Mediocre

Most athletes, parents and coaches hope that an athlete will just "get it"...eventually.

 

If they train harder.  Work longer.  Get stronger physically.  Maybe then...things will happen.

 

Maybe they start a new strength program.  Buy some new equipment.  Maybe tweak their diet...
